São João da Madeira
Despite its small area of 8 square kilometers, S. João da Madeira occupies a prominent place in the Portuguese business fabric, especially on the footwear industry. However, it does not stop here, its great business diversity makes S. João da Madeira an exporting reference in Portugal. This is the result of the dynamism and innovation of a resident population that is close to 50 thousand people, which forms the second largest city in the Aveiro district and an important urban center in the Porto Metropolitan Area.
Although the city's environmental indicators have improved in 2018, the municipality of S. João da Madeira wants to go even further and will launch several measures in the environmental area. This is possible with the financial support of the Operational Program Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources (PO SEUR).
As noted by Mayor Dr. Jorge Sequeira, the application of these environmental measures will be marked by a “major paradigm shift” in combating the production of waste in the city. For instance, the municipality allocated 1600 domestic ecopoints (each consisting of three selective waste disposal containers). In the near future, there will be implementation of a pilot program to test the application of a polluter-system payer, which will allow those who produce less waste to pay less for the service.
The goal is to further improve the results achieved in 2018, which resulted in a 2.29% reduction in the production of undifferentiated urban waste in the city, with an annual average per inhabitant of 446 kilograms.
